Bobbi Holmes, the author of the Self-Publishing Handbook,
began self-publishing in 1982, decades before the Internet brought the
possibility of affordable and easy self-publishing to authors around the
globe.
After earning
a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications, at California State
University, in 1976, Holmes eventually started her own small publishing
company, Robeth Publishing.
Desktop Publishing was the buzz word in the early 1980’s, and laser
printers were becoming affordable, providing an alternative to
traditional typesetting. Robeth Publishing began producing tabloid
publications, glossy magazines, and paperback books.
Robeth Publishing
was eventually brought under Robeth Publishing, LLC, and today publishes
books and websites.
During the past
eight years the face of self-publishing has altered dramatically, with
the advent of the Internet, and affordable print-on-demand. At one
time a self-publisher was forced to print hundreds or thousands of
copies, as a minimum run. Today is easy, and ridiculously
affordable to print just one book at a time.
Suddenly the
possibilities of self-publishing were open to anyone who was remotely
Internet savvy, and could use a word processor.
Friends and
acquaintances began asking Holmes about her experiences with lulu.com,
the online company she uses to publish her books. From those
questions and inquires a course evolved, entitled How to
Self-Publish, which she teaches at the community college in her
city.
Her first students,
primarily authors from a local writing group, were enthusiastic about
the course, and received it with positive reviews.
Holmes decided to rework the course, and bring it to the general public
in the form of a PDF eBook.
